Origin

Because they seek to answer complex questions like "Why is there day and night?", "How did humankind harness the power of fire?", "How did we establish the qualities a good leader must have?", and "How did mischief and evil come to afflict human beings?", there is a sense in which all myths and legends are about origins. To introduce students to this pervasive element in ancient stories, this section offers two myths and two legends that deal with the origin of certain material, ovservable things or phenomena: the seasons, disease and medicine, musical instruments, and volcanoes.

You will be able to read:

  1. The Origin of the Seasons: Demeter and Persephone (Greece)
  2. The Origin of Disease and Medicine (North America: Cherokee)
  3. How the Horse-Head Fiddle Came to Be (Mongolia)
  4. The Origin of the Volcano (Hawaii)
